Virtual desktops and VDI

Imagine a Madrid law firm of twenty-five people, half of them on a hybrid pattern. Every laptop carries downloaded case files, the practice management software only runs inside the office, and onboarding a new lawyer eats two days. A virtual desktop turns that around. Windows and the applications run in a data centre, say the Azure region in Madrid, and the laptop merely shows the screen. Data never leaves the platform, a stolen device exposes nobody, and a newcomer is set up in an afternoon. We design, build and look after the whole thing without leaving our desks.

What falls within the scope of this service

There are three main ways to deliver virtual desktops. We choose with you based on headcount, software and budget, and sometimes mix two of them.

Pin down the details with one of our engineers

Azure Virtual Desktop

Several users share hosts running multi-session Windows. It is the most efficient option from ten or fifteen people upwards, and automatic start and stop brings the cost down sharply.

Windows 365

One cloud PC per person at a fixed monthly price. Easy to manage and to budget for, well suited to small teams or executives who want their familiar setup.

RDS server with a European host

A session server at OVHcloud, IONOS or Arsys for organisations that would rather not rely on Azure, or whose software does not sit well in the public cloud.

Legacy programs

Applications that insist on local installation, hard-coded network paths or a USB licence dongle. We test each one and, where something cannot be virtualised, work out an alternative with the vendor.

Licensing

Microsoft 365 Business Premium and E3 already carry Azure Virtual Desktop usage rights, while an RDS server needs Remote Desktop CALs. We check what you already pay for so nothing is bought twice.

Ongoing operation

Monthly patching of the base image, joiners and leavers, performance and spend monitoring, plus adjustments whenever headcount shifts or new software arrives.

How the engagement unfolds, one stage at a time

A rollout for twenty or thirty users typically takes four to six weeks including the pilot.

01

Application inventory

We list every program, who uses it, how it is licensed and which peripherals it relies on. This is where the model gets chosen.

02

Proof of concept

A scaled-down environment with the three or four critical programs and a group of volunteers for one or two weeks.

03

Rollout

The production environment, profiles, conditional access rules and the client app delivered to devices through Intune.

04

Operation

User support, patching, profile backups and a monthly report on platform usage and cost.

The USB licence dongle is the classic trap. Some older engineering, design or accounting programs check their licence against a physical key plugged into the PC. A virtual desktop has no such port to offer. Before committing to dates we check whether the vendor sells a network or subscription licence; if not, that program stays on a local machine and we tell you so from day one.

Common questions

The desktop keeps running in the data centre; only access over that line is lost. Staff can carry on from home or over a mobile hotspot, and once the line returns the session picks up where it left off. We still suggest a backup connection at the office, even a 5G one.

Yes, and that is one of the benefits. Because data never lands on the device, you can allow personal machines while blocking copy, paste, printing and local saving. It is still wise to set this out in the remote work agreement required by Ley 10/2021.

Yes, thanks to Teams media optimisation for virtual desktops: audio and video travel straight from the user's device to Microsoft without passing through the host. We switch it on from the start.

It depends on the model and hours of use. After the inventory you receive a per-user monthly figure split into infrastructure, licences and our operation fee, so you can weigh it against replacing laptops.

Yes. During the proof of concept nobody gives up their current PC, and data stays on your servers or in SharePoint. Everyone moves across only once the pilot has proved itself.

Let us scope your virtual desktops

Tell us how many people would work on virtual desktops and with which programs. Within one working day we will suggest a model and a first monthly estimate.
