Cloud backup

A fire at the unit, a DANA flash flood swamping the ground floor or a break-in at the office takes out the server and the NAS sitting half a metre away. The off-site copy is the one that survives, and it also ends the habit of somebody taking a drive home on Fridays, when they remember. We set it up with providers whose data centres are in Spain or the European Union, encrypting data before it leaves your network and shielding it from deletion for as long as you choose.

What falls within the scope of this service

A cloud copy complements the local one rather than replacing it. Local brings files back in minutes; cloud outlives whatever destroys the office.

Destination in Spain or the EU

S3-compatible storage in the AWS region in Aragon, Azure Spain Central or European providers such as OVHcloud, IONOS or Arsys, under a data processing agreement your DPO can review before signing.

Encryption at source

Data is encrypted on your network before transfer. You own the key; we document where it is kept and confirm at every test that it is still available.

Deletion lock

With Object Lock, backups cannot be removed nor their retention shortened during the configured period, even if an attacker obtains the console credentials.

First upload and bandwidth

The symmetric fibre common in Spain helps, yet the first full copy of several terabytes still takes days. We schedule it for nights and weekends, with a speed cap during office hours.

Predictable costs

We price storage, operations and, crucially, what downloading everything in a full restore would cost, a charge some providers bill separately and almost nobody checks.

Recovery in the cloud

If the office becomes unusable, critical servers can be started as virtual machines at the provider while your team works from home and hardware is replaced.

How the engagement unfolds, one stage at a time

Configuration takes a few days. The first upload depends on volume and your line, and we tell you how long before starting.

01

Costing

Volume, retention and upload speed. From those we give you the monthly cost and the length of the first upload before you commit to anything.

02

Destination setup

Storage created, access keys with minimal permissions, encryption, object lock and expiry rules.

03

Initial upload

The first full copy travels overnight and at weekends, or at a capped rate, so staff keep their bandwidth.

04

Restore test

We pull a sample down to an isolated machine and open it. Until that test passes, the service is not considered delivered.

A synced folder is not a backup. OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive mirror whatever happens on the computer instantly: if ransomware encrypts files on a laptop, the scrambled version reaches the cloud within seconds and overwrites the good one. Proper backup keeps earlier versions out of reach of both user and attacker, and that is what we configure.

Common questions

In the data centre we choose together, in Spain or another EU country, with the exact region recorded in the documentation. Because backups nearly always contain personal data about customers and staff, avoiding transfers outside the European Economic Area makes GDPR compliance far simpler.

That depends on volume, how long you keep backups and the provider. Before we begin you receive a fixed monthly figure based on those factors. Bills almost always balloon for one reason: nobody set old backups to expire. We configure that from day one.

Your download speed sets the pace. One terabyte over a 300 Mb line needs roughly eight hours just to arrive, and services then have to be brought back up. For the file deleted this morning you use the local copy; the cloud one is for when nothing else is left.

Not if it is set up properly: encryption happens on your network and the key never leaves your company. The flip side is that losing the key renders the backup useless, which is why its location is documented and checked at every test.

Critical systems start as virtual machines at the provider and your team connects from home over encrypted access. Start-up order and expected time for each application are set out in a recovery plan we prepare with you and revise after each test.
